A few words with Cathy about what makes a shop work
Can you tell us when you opened and what inspired you to open your own store?.....
I opened the shop in February 2010 and wanted to create a unique shop where customers enjoyed a boutique experience of shopping for high quality genuine vintage. Very few vintage shops existed at the high end of the market outside of London and I felt inspired to create and offer this in the North.

Given that you obviously had a clear idea of what market you were going for, what factors helped you choose location?

Harrogate is a brilliant town to visit, with so much going for it. A wealth of independent shops supported by both local people and visitors means that the town is seen as somewhere interesting to visit and shop. Aside from shopping there are all the other things that draw visitors like the Turkish baths and spa, the parks and gardens, restaurants, theatres, art galleries and key events at the conference centre and showground to name but a few!

People from all over the country visit Harrogate, particularly from the surrounding Yorkshire area, the North East, Scotland and Lancashire.  It has a reputation built on the history of being a Spa town and attracts the type of customer I felt was my market.

Also the shop was very accessible and easy to park which was another important consideration.

What have been your biggest challenges?
The two biggest challenges have been:
Achieving and maintaining the quality and rarity of the stock
Ensuring the shop environment reflects the beauty and interest of the vintage pieces by incorporating antique fittings and innovative displays

You've featured regularly on 'best of' lists.  Whats your proudest achievement to date?
Being nominated for the BBC Home and Antiques Magazine 'Best Vintage Shop' Award
Is there anything you've done with the shop which, if you had the time over again, you may have done differently?
I cant think of anything specific however I'm sure there's always room for improvement and I'm continually building on what I've achieved so far.
What advice would you give anyone thinking of opening their own vintage store?
I would say do your homework and make sure you know your market and understand what is going to make your shop stand out. Its knowing what your customers want and that will make customers keep coming back.
And what does the future hold for yourself?
For me I hope the shop continues to go from strength to strength as its reputation grows...and who knows after all the hard work I may even be able to take a much deserved holiday soon!! Oh and a special feature spread for the shop in Vogue would be nice!!!

Excellent selection of quality items, beautifully displayed.
Helpful friendly service, not in the slightest 'pushy'.

I see that your neighbour Chris Holmes Interiors is featured on today's front web page of Antiques News and Fairs - when he was exhibiting at IACF Newark. Must come and see both your shops!
